Mercedes Schlapp's position as White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't an easy one. It's not easy for Mercedes Schlapp to be the advisor to strategic communications for the White House. Schlapp remains focused throughout, by working closely White House policy and political teams as well as the legislative affairs team and shops. The first few months, Schlapp has focused on school safety problems, addiction, infrastructure and international trade. As a current employee she isn't in contact with many reporters. She gained attention in the wake of being announced as an option to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a comfortable position as White House strategist communications advisor. It's not easy for Mercedes Schlapp to be the White House's strategy communications adviser. She has to contend with many challenges, such being a president who serves as his communication director. Yet, through all of it Schlapp has stayed focused on the mission that she has been assigned, and is working closely with White House's policy and legislative affairs departments and policy shops as in the communications department to coordinate policy rollouts. The main areas of her agenda has focused on issues like security at schools, trade, as well as opioids. Schlapp hasn't dealt with reporters often in her current position. The issue came up in March when she received a flurry of interest, after it was known that Schlapp would be an option to replace Hope Hicks's post as the director of communications. It's been a nasty fight. The ally of Schlapp's, Tony Sayegh, and an opponent, also named Tony, began fighting on the news. Schlapp said that when she was informed that when the Washington Examiner ran a story which contained negative criticisms of Sayegh she had a discussion with him.
